DANSK Bomuldskompagni: Adding Some Spice to Men´s Everyday Wardrobe

Are you searching for men´s apparel that does not look all the same? We might have discovered just the perfect brand for you! Inspired by his former work as a graphic designer in the media industry, Oliver Harald Nielsen founded the brand DANSK Bomuldskompagni, melting a diversity of graphic prints with fashionable, clean cuts. Parrots on shirts, flowers on jackets, stripes on pants - Nielsen´s creativity seems infinite.

Nielsen´s aim is to create unique but affordable pieces for everyday use. Being developed around one particular pattern, for example starting with a tropical print shirt that provides the basis for the color and print schemes of further clothing pieces, each collection represents a different style and theme. Depending on the uniqueness of the design, the production ranges from five pieces, such as in the case of the flowered denim jacket shown below, to 500. “If an item is out of stock and someone asks if we could produce it again, we deny. We want our styles to stay unique, so we will rather offer a different print on the same cut”, Nielsen explains.

Originally founded as an in-house tailoring business run by Nielsen´s mother, DANSK Bomuldskompagni went through a rebranding process in 2014 when Nielsen himself decided to go into the fashion industry. Mother and son have been running the business together since then, the former providing the cuts, the latter designing the prints. The production mostly takes place in Italy or Turkey: “We only cooperate with factories that have been certified for a secure workplace, and we only work with organic fabrics”, the founder elaborates on the process of creation. DANSK Bomuldskompagni´s items can be purchased both in respective stores in Aarhus and Copenhagen, and online. Nielsen is also planning to expand trading internationally, including to Germany.

The Fashion Lens met designer Oliver Harald Nielsen and his mother at a showcase organized by Headstart Fashion (HSF), a foundation devoted to helping emerging fashion brands establish themselves in the industry. Their approaches include business development and networking strategies, and events where the brands get the chance to present themselves to both the press and potential customers.
